Local presence and number rotation explained
What local presence does
Local presence (also called local touch or number matching) chooses the caller ID number for each outbound call so that it shares the area code of the person being called. The idea is simple: people are more likely to pick up a call that looks local than one from an unfamiliar area code or a toll-free number.
Number rotation
High-volume dialing wears out numbers. Carriers and call-blocking apps use call volume and answer patterns to label numbers as spam. Number rotation spreads your calls across a pool of numbers so no single number is overused. Some products also watch for spam labels and swap flagged numbers out.
Does it work?
It can help, but it is not magic. Spam labelling now has a large effect on whether calls are answered, and a local-looking number that carries a "Scam likely" label will not get picked up. Caller ID authentication, such as STIR/SHAKEN in the US, also affects how your calls are treated, and it depends on your provider knowing the customer and the right to use each number.
Use real numbers
Use numbers you own or have the right to use through your provider. Showing someone else's number, or a number you cannot receive calls on, is spoofing, and it is restricted in many countries. A good practice is to make sure the number shown can be called back and reaches you.
What to look for
- Numbers in the area codes you call. See which codes matter in our area code guide.
- A pool size that fits your volume.
- Spam monitoring and automatic replacement.
- Branded caller ID as an option, where available.
Which apps list local presence
From each provider's own pricing page. “Check” means the page doesn't say, or we haven't verified that app yet.
| App | Status | What the provider says |
|---|---|---|
| CallHippo | Check | Not listed on the pricing page. |
| CloudTalk | Check | Local numbers and automatic outbound number selection are listed. Number rotation is not. |
| JustCall | Check | Local numbers are listed. Number rotation is not. |
| KrispCall | Check | Not verified yet. |
| PhoneBurner | Check | Premium includes a PhoneBurner number. 'Local Presence' is linked but not described on the pricing page. |
| Quo | Check | Not listed on the pricing page. |
| Readymode | Check | Autopilot cycles clean numbers to protect caller ID reputation. 'Local presence' isn't named. |
FAQ
Does local presence increase answer rates?
Vendors say it does, but results vary and spam labelling can cancel the benefit. Measure it: call the same kind of list with and without local numbers, and compare pickup rates.
Is local presence the same as caller ID spoofing?
Not if the numbers are real numbers that you own or are licensed to use through your provider. Showing a number you have no right to use is spoofing, and it is restricted or illegal in many places.
