Power dialer: how it works and which apps list it

What a power dialer does

A power dialer works through a list of contacts for you. When a rep finishes a call, or the wrap-up timer ends, the dialer places the next call automatically. It dials one number per available agent, so when someone answers there is always a rep ready to talk.

That removes the slow parts of manual calling: finding the next number, copying it, typing it and waiting through rings. Most power dialers also skip or log voicemails and no-answers automatically, and many can drop a pre-recorded voicemail so the rep moves straight on.

How it differs from other dialers

  • Progressive dialer. Also one call per agent, but it dials only when the agent is ready and has the contact record on screen. Many products use "power" and "progressive" interchangeably.
  • Predictive dialer. Dials several numbers per free agent and connects only the answered ones. More talk time, but if too many people pick up at once, some calls are abandoned.
  • Preview dialer. Shows the contact first and waits for the agent to press dial.

Who it suits

Power dialers suit small and mid-sized outbound teams, B2B selling where the rep needs context before talking, and teams that can't accept abandoned calls. If your list is large and you have many agents, a predictive dialer gets more talk time per hour, at the cost of compliance work.

What to look for

  • Lists and campaigns. Upload, de-duplicate and schedule lists, and set how many times to retry a number.
  • Voicemail drop and dispositions. One-click outcomes, with notes saved to your CRM.
  • Pacing and wrap-up control. How long reps get between calls.
  • Caller ID handling. How numbers are rotated and monitored for spam labels.
  • Price. Some products include the power dialer in the seat price; others sell it as an add-on.

FAQ

What is the difference between a power dialer and an auto dialer?

Auto dialer is a general term for software that dials for you. A power dialer is one type: it dials one number per available agent, as soon as the agent finishes the previous call. Predictive and progressive dialers are other types.

Does a power dialer drop calls?

It should not. It only dials when an agent is free, so someone is ready if the call is answered. Abandoned calls are a predictive dialer problem.
